Farewell, Mom!

At about 2:00 AM this morning, I arrived back home from my study abroad trip to Italy. However, though I was happy to be home, there was a noticeable presence absent in my welcoming party; it was my mom’s. Mom and I were always close, but on May 31^st (the day before I left for Italy) she passed into eternity. My mom played many roles in my life, and on that fateful day, I said goodbye to a friend, a teacher, a comforter, and of course my first travel partner.

As I was unpacking this morning from my latest trip, and got ready to put my passport away, I saw another passport; it was my mom’s. As I look at the stamps in her passport, each stamp tells a story that always involved the both of us. Together we have traveled tens of thousands of miles, via trains, boats, planes, cars, and even on foot to over 25 countries on 5 continents.

It was my Wondering Jew of a mom, with her adventuresome spirit who helped instill in me my deep love of travel, she always pushed me to go to new places, and to try new things. She was the one who taught me how to pack, book a flight, and maneuver through an airport; I owe so much of my travel experience to her.

It is a hard thought for me to think that mom and I will never travel on this earth together again. But just because she will not physically travel with me again, does not mean that I will not carry her with me; no matter where I go, she will always be in my heart.

So, I say: “Farewell, Mom; we’ll travel heaven together someday!”

I'm Back!

Well... at least for now. Two semesters of college have really dampened my blogging, not that I have not had any adventures, on the the contrary. However, the almighty "A" has dictated my priorities as of late, but hey it paid-off... I've kept a 4.0GPA for two whole semesters!

Exciting News For Cheaper Trans-Pacific Flights!

The headline "First low-cost Asian airline cleared for flights to the U.S." caught my eye last night. . . all thanks to a friend's Facebook post. This news really excites me, a development like this really opens some new options for Americans looking to travel to Asia.

Even if they never start offering direct flights to the East Coast, where I live, I am still going to keep an eye on this as according to the article, AirAsia's "long-haul affiliate," AirAisia X, will be handling the US - Asia routes. AirAsia X has direct flights to Auckland, New Zealand from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Gold Coast, Australia.

1 year ago, I arrive in the beautiful nation of New Zealand to begin a YWAM DTS, which unsurprisingly ended-up becoming the biggest adventure of my life to date. In the 7 months total that I was away, God really gave me a new and refreshed heart for missions on a scale that I could have never imagined before. I am so eager to see what is He has for me next!

7th Week In NZ

Last week was "Holy Spirit Week," an amazing week, if you ask me. Pastor Kristian Williams was our speaker. He pastors the Hope Center in an town called Bethlahem, been there, great church to visit if you are ever in the area.

The biggest event outside of the classroom was getting more vaccinations. All extra immunizations were optional but, HIGHLY since I am going to Vanuatu and will be doing medical work on top of that. I got a Hep A Booster and my first shot of Hep B. I had had 2 Hep A shots but, with the last one being just over 10 years ago, they recommended a final lifelong booster. I had never had any Hep B shots, though I thought that I had. Anyway, I got my first shot and should get my second shot during "Decompression Week," after my Outreach Phase ends.

Also, I got my first half of Outreach fees paid... well charged to my card at least. This whole thing has been a total walk of faith, the fact that I have gotten this far is a testimony about God's Faithfulness and Goodness. Back in July of 2012, my mom and I were in Helsinki, Finland visiting and longtime family friend. After a day of resting-up from our last flight, we decided to spend a day out with our host and truly see they city of Helsinki.

As we set out on foot from our friend's house (a town home), mom turned to me near the end of the building block and said, “Please run back and get my other bag.” So, as an obedient son, I quickly ran back to the house to retrieve the bag.

Now, the kids opted not to join us on our city tour, thus the house was left unlocked. So, as I opened the door I thought, “Wow! The kids invited their friends over quickly.” And... after about 5 seconds, I realized that I had actually walked into the wrong house!

The people inside house, never saw me as far as I know, they were too busy watching TV. With the way these particular units are laid out, their backs were to the front door, allowing me to correct my error unseen.

From what I found out later, it is apparently not terribly uncommon for Finns to leave their doors unlocked during the day. If the door had been locked I would have realized my error but, I would not have this funny story to share!

Got My International Driving Permit!

After getting the immunizations mandated for my YWAM DTS yesterday, we went up to AAA's (American Automobile Association) Bay Hill office up in Orlando to get my International Driving Permit (IDP). Originally I was going to mail-in the AAA application (found here) but, I needed 2 matching passport sized photos. So after a couple phone calls, we decided that it was best to just go and apply in person; no waiting period and I could pay with a credit card.

AAA charges $10 for passport photos on-top of the standard $15 fee for the IDP itself. Now if you are a premier AAA member you get this fee waived.

The IDP will good for one year from date of issuance. However, you can ask them to date it to a future date as I did but, not more than 6 months in advance.

To be honest, I am not sure that I will be using my IDP at all but, for such a small fee I wanted to be safe than sorry. I doubt that I would want to drive in NZ as they drive on the left; not sure how I would adapt to that. Though I got my permit through AAA you can also get one through the National Auto Club (NAC). They are the only two private entities in the United States authorized to issue them to holders of US driver's license. So, if you see another entity offering them it is probably a scam. No more passport page inserts for frequent travelers - FoxNews.com

I stumbled upon this article this morning. It is a good thing that I just got the jumbo passport to begin with.

When I was applying for my last passport renewal, the lady asked me if I wanted a "jumbo passport." She said it is the same price for either size, but the extensions will cost you later. So, I opted for the "jumbo passport" to be safe than sorry. Good thing too, I would now have to get a whole new passport if would have ended up needing more space in a small passport after December 31st 2015.

"If you travel overseas a lot, now may be a good time to take a close look at your passport.  

The State Department said Thursday that starting Jan. 1 it will no longer offer the 24-page inserts you can buy when you run out of pages to existing passport books.

Adults running out of space for new visas in their 28-page passports will have to pay $110 for a new passport of either 28 or 52 pages. The prices are slightly lower for minors—but passports for children 16 and under are only valid for 5 years, as opposed to 10 years for adults."

Home Again!

Woke up in Florida this morning for the first time in almost three weeks. Though I was only suppose to stay in Ohio for 12 days, a last minute extension (at the behest of my aunt) of one week was added to my trip. It was totally worth it and she really needed my help.

All in all, I had a great time in Ohio! Considering that I am going away for school in January, I will probably not visit again till Heart Camp in September 2016 (will post pics in a future post).

Well, time to move on to the next chapter in my life! :D

Why is it that every time I am am getting ready to, fly I hear about some plane accident.  The last time I was going getting ready for a trip I stayed-up until about mid-night watching "Air Crash Investigation" on YouTube!

The best way to survive a long-haul flight

On a personal note, I will say that I tend to go into a mode almost of hibernation. When I am on a flight, any flight, I tend to more or less find a position and stay that way fro extended periods of time. If you have a friendly seat mate that helps too. 

Now, I understand that no every one can handle flights the way I do, actually the way I do it can be dangerous for those who are likely to develop blood clots. So, I am not saying you need to do it my way, that is just how I do it.

Below is an article I found with some good information for the every day person.
